My eldest and her husband became parents yesterday. I was privileged to be present for the birth..and much of the hard labor. I came away with that experience wondering just how the world's population got this big? OUCH. I also wondered why anyone would do it a second time ON PURPOSE.
You see, I never experienced what I likened to pushing a watermelon through a straw. My poor daughter has been constant PAIN.
After SEVEN MONTHS of suffering and mom fighting for her, she finally had an MRI last week. The results? HER BACK IS BROKEN. Literally. She has a fractured spine.
I am so flippin fed up with the horrid medical system. SEVEN MONTHS. I asked for an MRI way back in April. I'm no good today. I can't stop crying. I'm a wreck. My best friend... more than a best friend.... is moving in a couple weeks. We've been inseparable for 18 years. No one else gets me--truly gets me. I'm so sad. I'm gonna be completely empty inside.

We left our home near San Diego at 8 a.m. and drove the 90 freeway miles without incident. Once we got to downtown Long Beach, however, everything changed for the worse, and remained that way for the rest of the day.
There was no traffic control heading toward the convention center. Our culture, society, and our science was impacted forever.
Who doesn't recognize the phrases "warp speed," "beam me up," or "live long and prosper?" Even those that have never seen an episode of the original series could pick Spock out of a lineup.

It was a glorious evening full of fandom, surprises, and friends.
Here's how it went down:
We arrived at the Gower Gate just before 6 p.m. and lined up. We were given release forms to sign. Because I was told there was no fracture (see previous blog post), I let Treklet perform last weekend in The Little Mermaid while wearing an orthopedic ankle boot. She did not perform in the shows that she cast as ensemble, only the 3 shows that she was Flotsam. We integrated the boot into her costume, and despite some pain, she was eager to be onstage. Evidently her heel got caught on a step and she twisted her ankle and fell from one platform to another. I got the call at 8:10 p.m. to come to the theater. "It looks bad," are the words I remember.

I'll just let that sink in....
I'll admit, when I was first told, in the parking lot of the school by my friend, Cameron, who ran out of his office to tell me he just saw it on Facebook, I didn't have much to reply. I knew he was ill. I knew he had been rushed to the hospital earlier this week. Treklet and I went to our second Gallifrey One last weekend.
While I consider this to be one of the better run conventions that we have attended, and at a reasonable ticket price for all we get, the accommodations and food were outrageous.

There are actually 2 very different answers to these questions.
I don't know when I first started liking science fiction, but I know what happened to seal my love for it: MUSIC! It was the 1976 and my eyes were filled with a cute guy who filled my ears with Rush 2112. It was true love (the album, not the guy). The Amazing Spiderman 2 wasn't even on my radar. Probably because of the last series of Spidey films, I was never a Spidey fan. MacQuire's Peter Parker was a total wuss. I knew so little of this film going in, that I didn't even know Orci and Kurtzman were the EPs and writers for the film. That alone would have kept me out of the theater.

Once we finally arrived, I was amazed to find out it was free! It cost only $2 each to see the space shuttle Endeavour, and the rest was donation-only (yes, we donated). We opted not to buy IMAX tickets, since we can see Lemurs in San Diego.

What does that mean in 2013? It seems to me that a day officially set aside for reflection and gratitude in 1863 by President Lincoln has become little more than a day about personal gluttony and corporate greed.
