The Legend of the Guardians

I had 2 IMAX passes and Treklet had a minimum day today, so we went to the movies. We saw The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. (doesn't that sound Klingon to you?)

We enjoyed the film, but the title is unwieldy! I couldn't figure out what tickets to order at the ticket window, so I just said, Two for the Owl movie." That worked. Our passes were good for the IMAX 3D version of the show. Usually I wouldn't pay the extra money for an IMAX 3D version of an animated movie, but I'm glad our passes were for that.

The movie is visually beautiful. The owls, especially the Barn Owls, or Tytos (in the movie they are referred to by their genus name), looked real. I am a birder, and I know my owls. The perplexing thing about the movie was that all of the owl species were North American, but the setting of the movie was Australian, as were the character's accents. There was an echidna, huge Australian bats and a reference to Dingoes. Easily identifiable owls were Barn, Great Horned, Great Gray, Snowy, Elf, Whiskered Screech, Burrowing, Long-eared, Short-eared and Barred, all of which are found in North America. There may have been a Sooty or Masked owl from Australia represented, but I don't think so....fellow birders let me know what you ID if you see the movie!

Most people wouldn't notice the above discrepancy, but it distracted me. I'm a true nerd.

The Story:  The story begins with a happy Tyto Owl family comprised of Mom, Dad, 2 sons and a daughter and their nursemaid, a snake. Weird about the snake, I know, but I have to keep reminding myself this is fantasy. The brothers get their first branching lesson from Dad. One brother, Kludd, is prideful and jealous, and the other, Soren,  is a dreamer. The sister is very young, and not ready for branching yet. When Mom & dad go out hunting for the night, the two young brothers decide to go out and practice on their own.

They end up on the ground, defenseless, are attacked by a wild boar, then snatched up by the "Pure Ones" harvesters. They are taken prisoner by the evil Pure Ones who are Nazi-like in their Tyto superiority complex. Soren and his new friend, Gylfie, an Elf Owl are taken to be brainwashed into enslavement, while Kludd kowtows to the evil Nyra as he craves acceptance like a lonely kid joining a street gang.

Long story, short, Soren and Gylfie escape the concentration camp, befriend a comedic Burrowing Owl and his companion a Great Gray Owl, who coincidentally has caught the nanny snake for dinner. Together the five of them go in search of the Guardians who they hope will defeat the Pure Ones.

The movie has amazing visuals. The flight scenes in 3D through forests and over tumultuous water are beautiful. There is lots of peril, and extended battle scenes. The owls make use of warrior helmets and scythelike metal talon extensions, which they use to impale and slice their enemies. Therefore, I cannot recommend this movie for the youngest audience, but my eight year old Treklet enjoyed it very much.  I will add that Treklet is a bit of a nerd, and very bright and mature for her age. The PG rating is very much necessary.

The characters are well voiced, the scenery, flight and battle scenes are beautifully done, and the score is excellent, although at one point near the end  reminiscent of the Jurassic Park Theme.  I'm not sure non-birders will appreciate the attention to detail in the owls plumage, but I think everyone will appreciate the cleverly designed facial movements, realistic flight motion, and general beauty of the film.

Why are you buying expensive toxic cleaners?

I've been thinking for a while now about cleaning products. I use very little in the way of commercial cleaners, and wanted to share how to save money while going green around the house.

However, I realized today that I don't need to reinvent the wheel, so instead I'm going to give you a couple of links.

Katie at Kitchen Stewardship has a great post on the three basic cleaners she uses. They are white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. All three can be found super-cheap, and none of them will poison you or your kids. Check it out here.

The Heinz Vinegar website has dozens of ideas for using white vinegar all around the house! There is a section for every room in the house. Check it out here!

Occasionally I find coupons for vinegar, but mostly I buy the giant gallon-sized bottle at Costco. I have three spray bottles of a 50/50 vinegar solution in the house, one in the kitchen, upstairs cleaning cabinet, and downstairs utility room. I have not used Windex on any mirrors or windows in 13 years. I even use it on our hardwood floors.

I have a large stash of baking soda & peroxide because they regularly go on sale at Walgreens (2/$1 baking soda and 3/$1 peroxide). Baking soda does a great job on scrubbing sinks and toilets, and if you get a little blood stain on clothing(test for colorfastness if it's not white clothing) a little peroxide poured directly on it before washing will remove it (a trick I learned when I was working in urgent care back in the '80s).

Check out the links. You'll be surprised how much you can do with 2 bottles and a box, and how much money you will save when you don't buy harsh chemicals to do your housework.

Garage Selling is Hard

Today is the ONE day of the year that we are allowed to have a garage sale in our community of around 570 homes. A local realtor advertises, and makes maps of the participating homes available at the gate. She also brings us donuts.

We've been storing things in the garage for months. I've lost quite a bit of weight, and Treklet has outgrown many things, so there are lots of clothes. Katie brought things home from college that she no longer needs while living at home. Treklet cleaned out her toy drawers. My BFF Melissa even brought some things over.

It's been slow...lots of cars drive by but few stop. What are these people looking for? I have a TV, a VCR, a DVD player, a route, rbooks, tools, bathroom decor, bedding, and clothing of all sizes.

We packed up at noon, just as the mercury hit the 100 mark. Our total take was around $100, about evenly split between Katie, Melissa and me, with about $5 for Treklet. It was a lot less than we had hoped for, and we had quite a bit left over. We hung on to the most valuable things, and set bags and boxes at the curb for the Amvets truck to pick up. Within 20 minutes scavengers came and took most of it: all of the clothes, gadgets, even the lightbulb out of a lamp. They only left books, a few hardware items, the bulbless lamp, and few other items. Pathetic.

While I didn't shop anyone's garage, I did get some free stuff from my neighbor. He gave me two plastic Chicago Bears tall mugs and a set of 6 Bears cocktail glasses. I sure hope they win Monday, so I can drink from them proudly. :-)  I traded Melissa's hubby my Padres beach towel for his Charger sweatshirt. I also got a skirt from her, and gave her all the jeans that didn't sell for her craft projects. Another one of my neighbors brought over some fabric, which Melissa can use, too. I like all the trading among neighbors much more than the haggling over quarters with strangers.

While I was perspiring in the garage, Treklet was at the beach with her Brownie Troop picking up trash for Coastal Cleanup Day. She got home with just enough time to eat lunch before I drove her to her callback audition for Annie. What a busy girl!

Katie is at APU getting paid to take some pictures, and I'm sure having a blast with her college friends.

I'm relaxing in the A/C catching up on some TV until I have to pick Treklet up. I hope she gets the part!

Got Dogs?

Just a reminder: it’s a good idea to set up a separate email account that you use for signing up for coupons, freebies and newsletters. I love Gmail for this purpose. Of course, if you prefer there are lots of other free email providers available, such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

I also use Google Reader for keeping track of the many blogs I follow. I can organize them according to categories (ie. Star Trek, Couponing, Friends’ Blogs, etc.) and I can skim headlines without having to open every post. It even syncs with my iPhone RSS reader.

I was excited to find some more pet freebies:

Go to the Natura Pet website and cick on “Request Your High Value Coupon” and fill out your information. A coupon for a FREE bag of pet food will be mailed to you!  http://www.naturapet.com/

My New Addiction

I heard about The Leviathan Chronicles while listening to Sci Fi Diner Podcast. It sounded interesting, so I went to iTunes and downloaded the first few episodes, then promptly forgot about them for a few weeks. I recently started listening in my car. It's awesome!

The Leviathan Chronicles is categorized as a podcast, but it's actually an audio drama, complete with actors, sound effects, and music. Each podcast is a chapter of the story. It is well written, and for the most part, well acted. I am now on Chapter 10 and I am enjoying it very much! There are 25 Chapters in the first season, and when I've finished them I don't know what I'll do until Season 2 is released!

I highly recommend you give it a try. It is FREE on iTunes. You can also check out the website here: www.leviathanchronicles.com  There is a lot to explore there, and you can also download episodes from the website, although I think it's faster through iTunes.

Enjoy!

I've got lots of links for you today!

Last night my daughter used up the last of my page protectors for a school project and still needed more. I went to Staples today armed with a 10% off one item coupon and $4 in rewards. WOW! Page protectors are expensive! I got the store brand, thin sheet protectors, 200 pack priced at $19.99. They cost me $15.21 after tax...OUCH. We do use a lot of them, though. I keep my autograph collection in them, and use them in my coupon insert binder. Treklet has a binder for a scrapbook, and uses them for her pages, and Katie is using hers for her "Makeup Morgue" which is a fancy name for a collection of faces from magazines that are used to show examples of different types of makeup applications.

Katie also informed me that she has to make four batches of lemon squares for an event at school. She'll need at least a dozen eggs, and lemon juice, which we are low on. So I moved up my grocery shopping. Since Ralphs and Vons are across the street from each other, and near Treklet's school, I chose to shop both stores today. Vons has 16 oz containers of raspberries for $1.99 this week, which is a STEAL and a coupon for 18 eggs at $1.99, which is cheaper than Costco. In order to use the coupon, you have to have a minimum $10 order, so I got 2 containers of raspberries, a pound of pears for .99, a large bottle of Safeway lemon juice for $3.99 and a package of boneless, skinless chicken breasts for only $1.97/lb. Yes, that was more than $10, but I couldn't resist the chicken at that price!

Ralphs is the winner for produce deals this week, other than the raspberries. I got broccoli, bananas, green beans, sweet onions & garlic. I also got 5 lbs of Roma tomatoes for .99/lb and made my favorite tomato soup with garlic and basil recipe as soon as I got home. It paired wonderfully with a grilled cheese sandwich and a pear for The Alien's lunch.  For a complete list of the best Ralphs deals this week go here:

Remember that Petsmart 15% coupon from a couple of days ago? Well it just so happens that Petsmart had hay on sale today. I got two 48 oz bags and a 5 lb. bag of pellets for little Stinky and saved $7 in all.

Oh, and I got this link for a free sample of rabbit or guinea pig food from CareFresh!

I got a great deal on movie tickets today! Common Sense With Money passed on this deal from Living Social. Her's the deal:

Freeeeebies & Coupons

I slacked off over the summer on signing up for freebies. I'm just starting to get some deliveries again. Last week I think I signed up for at least 15 freebies. Are you getting freebie notifications?

Here's a few sites that you can subscribe to daily emails. Some of the emails also have coupon links.
     Free Snatcher
     The Frugal Girls
     My Savings
     Saving Lane

Today I got a free sample of Ultra Downy. Included were a $2.50 off coupon and three $1.50 off coupons to share.  I like to save the laundry samples (and most personal hygiene samples, too) for when we travel.

I'm going to try to include links to some coupons in my posts. For many products, remember to check these sites each week:

     Coupons.com
     Smartsource
     Redplum

The Frugal Girls now has a coupon database on their site. If you're looking for a certain coupon, just search for it here and they'll let you know where to find it. I love it!

As I've mentioned before, our pets cost us too much money. The 6 free dogfood meals I got at Wags a little while back were a hit. I use shredded paper from junk mail, envelopes, and what's left after I print and cut my coupons for the guinea pig cage. I planted plenty of herbs and swiss chard in my garden this year for Stinky, too. I found a cheaper (and IMO better) groomer for my schnauzers. Today I got a 15% off entire purchase coupon for Petsmart. It's good Wed-Sun. this week, so I will work a trip to Petsmart into my week for guinea pig food and hay.

Now that autumn is here (well officially on Wednesday), I'm thinking about fall colors, harvest decor and my favorite candles...Yankee Candle Harvest Scent. Here's a Yankee Candle coupon good for $10/$25. You'll have to sign up at My Savings to access it.

Well I hope that was helpful. I can't wait to see what shows up in my mailbox this week! What did you get?

print for next week...

CVS FTW...Wags, not so much.

I took some coupons and ECBs from yesterday and went to CVS this morning. I paid $1.02 OOP and got $7.80 ECB back, and I still have $2 ECB leftover from yesterday's trip! Here's what I got:

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick       $6.99  MQ $2, Peelie  $2 earned $5 ECB
Edge Infused Shaving Gel      (2)     $2.79 ea, MQ BOGO, MQ $1, earned $1.80 ECB
Quilted Northern 12 Big Rolls         $5.99  CVS Q $1
Ivory Soap 3 bar pk. (3)                 $.99 ea, (3) MQ .25 ea

All this for $1.02 OOP and I got $7.80 ECBs back!

So far this week I've spent $9.48 OOP and still have $9.80 ECB and (3) $4/$20 coupons left!
BTW, one of my ECBs is from my bag tag. You do have one, don't you?

I went to the doctor today with the Dead Guy (the cadaver tendons in my ankle) and she was very pleased with my progress. I am now allowed to gradually increase my activities, with my brace on, and gradually increase my time out of the brace when I am not exercising. Yay! I don't have to go back for three whole months.

After my wonderful trip to CVS and the doctor, I thought I'd try to bet Walgreens. The fates wouldn't have it! I stopped at the first Walgreens where I bought a Thermacare wrap, on sale for $2.49, minus a $1 MQ. I paid $1.49 OOP and got $1.50 RR and a $3/$15 coupon, which expired tomorrow. So I decided to do my second trip right away to use the coupon. I sat in the car, planned my trip, and went to the next Wags, just a couple of miles away and on the way home.

FAIL #1: I planned to buy 2 Tilex and 2 Glade Plug-In refills and Trident gum, which would put me over the $15 threshold for the coupon and give me $3 RR back. The store was sold out of Tilex, and the Plug-In refills were the only Glade products NOT on the RR deal.  I went to my car to get the rest of my coupons and tried to wing it.

FAIL #2:  I put $18 worth of stuff in my cart, before coupons. At the register everything fell apart. First of all, the Reach toothbrush coupon wouldn't work. We never figured out why. With the WQ & MQ it would have been free, but since I didn't need a toothbrush, I just had the girl void it. I'm still over $15, so I figure it's no big deal.  The clerk rings everything up, then the $3/$15 coupon. Fine. Then she scans the Wags coupons, which are the ones that really bring the sale price down. They don't work! Guess what? The $3/$5 coupon at Wags will ONLY work if your total is $15 AFTER coupons. Otherwise, it voids the other coupons! This just doesn't happen at any other store. No matter what, Wags is gonna get $12 out of you if you want to use that coupon. So again, we void...we void the whole transaction and start over!

FAIL #3She rings it all up again, takes all the MQs off, then the WQs. Now the Wags Trident coupon won't work! Gah! Seems it's only good for one specific kind of Trident. Luckily the manager knew right where to find it, so we voided the gum, and rang up the correct variety, then the coupons all worked. Whew!

I didn't get what I set out to, but I still managed to save 71%. Here's what I got::

5 boxes Royal sugar free gelatin at 5/$1
3 3-packs of Trident White gum at 2/$4  minus a $2 MQ
Quaker 1 minute oats for $1.50  minus a $1 MQ
Peeps Ghosts (3 per pkg) for .39
Peeps Pumpkins (5 per pkg) for .39
2 Reeses Pumpkins for .39 ea.

After coupons and RR I paid $5.56 OOP.  I did spend $1.56 on junky Halloween candy, but I've put them away for Treklet and I'm done with Halloween candy. I have a stockpile of Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks that I got for free several months back and a bag of individually wrapped pineapple hard candies from Hawaii that nobody is eating, and that's what I'm handing out.

I may or may not visit Wags again this week. There are some great deals on stock up items that I'm not close to running out of yet, but if the shopping whimsy hits I will get baking soda ( I use it for cleaning!), salt, honey, mushrooms, peroxide (another cleaning product in my house!), and raisins. My daughter mentioned she's out of foundation. I have some Covergirl coupons, and Wags has a BOGO half off sale, so maybe we'll visit Wags together tomorrow. And who knows? Maybe the Tilex truck will have delivered by then!
